How to Get Red Dye Out of Clothes

To how to get red dye out of clothes, you must act before the garment hits the dryer. Rewash immediately in cold water with an oxygen-based stain remover like OxiClean. Never use hot water, as heat permanently bonds the pigment to the fabric fibers. For stubborn bleeds, soak the item in an OxiClean solution for up to 6 hours before rinsing.

Red dye is one of the most stubborn to remove because red pigments bond quickly and deeply to fabric fibers. Whether it came from a red garment bleeding in the wash, red food or drink, or a red dye spill, the approach is similar – speed and the right product make the biggest difference.

By Source of the Red Dye

Source Best First Treatment Follow-Up If Needed
Red garment bled in wash Rewash immediately with OxiClean, cold water Carbona Color Run Remover
Red wine Blot, cold water, hydrogen peroxide + dish soap OxiClean soak
Red Kool-Aid / punch Cold water rinse, OxiClean soak Enzyme-based detergent wash
Red food (pasta sauce, ketchup) Cold water + dish soap, then OxiClean Repeat OxiClean soak
Hair dye (red) Dish soap first, then rubbing alcohol, OxiClean soak May need professional cleaning
Permanent red marker Rubbing alcohol, blot out OxiClean soak for residual

Step-by-Step: Color Bleed (Dye Transfer)

Step 1 – Do not dry the item. This is the most important rule. If the item has gone through the wash but not the dryer, the stain is still removable.

Step 2 – Rewash immediately in cold water with OxiClean Versatile Stain Remover. Use the full amount and the longest cold cycle available.

Step 3 – If staining remains, prepare an OxiClean soak: 1 scoop per gallon of warm water. Submerge the item and soak for 1-6 hours, checking every hour.

Step 4 – For significant color bleeding affecting multiple items, use Carbona Color Run Remover or Dylon Run Away. These are specifically formulated for dye accidents and work on colored fabrics where bleach cannot be used.

Step 5 – Rewash in cold water and inspect before drying.

For Red Stains on White Fabric

White fabric gives you more options. After OxiClean treatment, if red staining remains, you can use:

  • 3% hydrogen peroxide – apply directly, let sit 30 minutes, rinse in cold water
  • Oxygen bleach (not chlorine bleach) for a full wash – very effective on organic red stains
  • White wine vinegar soak – less aggressive but can help with light residual staining

What If the Stain Was Dried?

Set red dye stains are the hardest to remove. Try a 6-hour to overnight OxiClean soak with warm water first. If that doesn’t work, Carbona Color Run Remover with the hottest water safe for the fabric is your best at-home option. Some permanently set stains require professional dry cleaning with solvent-based treatments.

Products That Work

Product Best For Notes
OxiClean Versatile Most red dye stains Color safe, oxygen-based
Carbona Color Run Remover Significant dye transfer Color-safe, designed for this
Hydrogen peroxide (3%) Red stains on white fabric Not for colored items
Dylon Run Away Whole-load dye accidents Works on all colors

Final Thoughts

Red dye stains require speed and the right product – particularly OxiClean for colored fabrics and hydrogen peroxide for white ones. Never heat-dry until the stain is completely gone. Carbona and Dylon Run Away are worth keeping on hand if you frequently wash mixed colors together.
